Ukraine Becomes the 27th European Country

Reporting on Cultural Policy


After the Steering Committee for Culture of the Council of Europe adopted as of May 10, 2007, the National Report on Culture of Ukraine prepared by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Ukraine with Experts’ Report prepared by the team of international experts in cultural policies, the Ukraine became the 27th state, member of the CoE, reporting on its cultural policy.
On May 31, 2007, the Collegium of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Ukraine approved the decision on the development of the Action Plan for National Report public discussion and Cultural Policy elaboration. With National Report on Culture for the Council of Europe, the Ukrainian minister noted, the Ukraine completed the stage of superficial changes or semi-reforms, as international experts stated. Now the time comes to start building new cultural policy considering the world practice and new role of culture in the modern society. All speakers stressed on importance of the moment, they were: Yu. Bohutsky, Minister of Culture and Tourism of Ukraine, H. Kokhan, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, O. Hrytsenko, Director of the state Centre of Cultural Policy Research, T. Sandell, Director of British Council/Ukraine, O. Butsenko, Director of the Development Centre “Democracy through Culture”. The latter noted furthermore that there are local communities (cities and towns) in Ukraine, which declared already culture as the basis for their development strategy. It means that the seeds of new reforms have good soil for their growth.
